Gamechanger #4: Practice

This guy would be good

Practice makes perfect. Such a cliche now isn’t it? Well it’s sort of true – good practice makes perfect. Practice alone makes better.

However, there comes a time when you have to go out guns-a-blazing and do something amazing. Self-help gurus call this “take massive action”!

It wasn’t until April 2012 that I set myself a tough goal and went for it – no questions, no excuses.

The 21 day challenge.

So trying to get back into this thing after a little break but suffering a lot of AA. Going out on my own isn’t what it used to be. I decided to knock this on the head with a 21 day challenge: 10 compliment openers a day, 21 days. No excuses.

It’s been tough – I work a full time job and I often work evenings. So when can I do it? On the way to work, on the way from one job to the next, take out a lunch time to do some. Whatever, I must do it.

I’ll summarise my thoughts through this, day by day, with one phrase.

Day 1: Tough. Can I do this 21 days?

Day 2: No way will I keep this up for 20 days.

Day 3: Stop thinking, just do it.

Day 4: I don’t have time to do this.

Day 5: It’s a challenge, I will complete it

Day 6: Shut up, brain

Day 7: Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Day 8: Alright, come on you fuckers!

Day 9: Do I really have to do this?

Day 10: Haha, that was fun!

Day 11: I love saying this shit!

Day 12: Stop giving me numbers girls, I’m doing a challenge!

Day 13: I don’t have time today.

Day 14: In set I sound like I don’t care. I don’t.

Day 15: Whatever

Day 16: Get them done

Day 17: Oh my jesus this is boring

Day 18: Yawn

Day 19: Tick

Day 20: Meh

Day 21: Fuck me. Done it. That got BORING!

And that was it. A simple exercise: 210 approaches, 21 days. With a full time job and a part time job, and mostly working on weekends. What it did was get me through fear, anxiety, to excitement, fun, validation, and – finally – boredom. I think getting to boredom is a great thing. Once you are indifferent to it, you watch what happens to you. You become a tank to her pea-shooter.

But the best bit of this challenge was just in doing it. I didn’t make all 10 every day – I made about 85% of it. But that’s not the point – I set myself a challenge and in a short time I changed MASSIVELY, which would normally take me much longer to achieve.

If you’re still in AA mode, or you don’t feel motivated, set a goal like this!
